about

A version of my reduced tone row matrix. Recorded July 2016. Includes electronic sounds mixed in to make a more expansive song (and hinsight says I could probably have replaced those with field recorded sound).

The score provides a structure for composing pop songs. It is based on many years of song research with stringent archaeological observations of rock n roll / rhythm n blues. I was trying to find a place for myself in the zone of composition occupied first by serialism and then by minimalism.

I was looking for a way to communicate a rough idea of pop song structure, via rhythm n blues and rock n roll, to people in the future. They might have music theory texts and ideas from the past. But discs and digital might not survive, and how will they know?

Arnold Schoenberg wanted all the notes kept in play, but the whole point of music is to not do that. Had he not ignored microtonality, he would have made a better go of the whole business of serialism. Minimalism went some way to making serialism a more humane endeavour, but after a happy start out of jazz, rhythm n blues and rock n roll, those people seem to have gotten into a fixed habitus. It's nice seeing the process, but you wouldn't want to *be* it.

Just make a reduced tone row matrix, that'll do it:

............I-0........I-5........I-7............
P-0.......C..........F...........G.......R-0
P-7.......G..........C..........D.......R-7
P-5.......F...........A#.........C......R-5
...........RU-0.....RI-5....RI-7..........

The score (edited so as to give civilians half a chance):

CFGCFGCFG
CFGCFGCFG
A#CFDCFGCA#
CFGCFGCFG
CGFCGFCGF
CGFCGFCGF
CA#FDCGDA#C
